Wednesday, March 2 - Dr. Seuss Day!! - If your child has a Dr. Seuss shirt or wants to dress like one of the characters, feel free to do so as we celebrate his birthday. They may also bring in their favorite Dr. Seuss book and we will read it and share. This is completely optional!
Friday, March 4th: First Grade field trip to see Mary Poppins play.
Uniforms and lunch from home are required for this day.

March 15: Easter Egg Hunt 11:25 on the playground (more information to follow)

Math: This week we will continue to work on chapter 8 - Place Value
Timed Tests: We will continue taking timed tests each week. The students are doing a great job. Continue practicing the facts listed below. We will continue to have a subtraction timed test on Tuesday and an addition timed test on Thursday.
For subtraction, we will have 20 problems in 4 minutes and we will be subtracting 4 and 5.
For addition, we will have complete 50 problems in 3 minutes.

Phonics: We will have a Phonics test each Friday. Students will be expected to write the following:
short vowel blends: chi, qua
long vowel blends: sho
special sounds: y in rainy, er in verse, sh in ship, ey in key, o in shovel
spell these words: no new words
syllables: no new syllables
We will practice these in class every day!
Social Sciences: We will begin learning about land forms, continents, and contributions of famous people.
Reading: Don't forget to read your books on Thursday night and be ready for a test on Friday! :)
Spelling: Beginning this week we will have 15 spelling words and 5 bonus words. We will have a spelling test every Friday. Students will write these words when I call them out. This week five bonus words will be added to the list. Students should learn the 15 spelling words first. For a challenge, they can also learn the five bonus words. All students will take the bonus portion of the test. For each bonus word spelled correctly, the student will get 1 extra point on the test. There is no penalty for spelling a bonus word incorrectly.

Bible: We will have a Bible verse each week. Students will say the verse to me.

Handwriting: We will practice writing words in our best handwriting.
Creative Writing: Students will continue to practice writing complete sentences using capital letters at the beginning and periods at the end. I will introduce question marks this week. We will continue learning the parts of a sentence. We will be writing super sentences. All sentences should have these four parts:
Begin with a capital letter.
End with a punctuation mark.
Be written neatly.
They will write sentences with their spelling words, and write in their journals daily. We will write about February, and some of our favorite things.
